The enthusiastic volunteer from the Desert Botanical Garden asked us if we had a visitor’s guide and trail map. We said we did, but that we could not locate where the Chihuly glass pieces were on the map. She realized we had an old guide and gave us a new one. Aaahhhhh, there they are!
Hand-blown Glass among Cactus
We were treated to a new outdoor exhibition of Chihuly hand-blown glass in the tough desert environment of the Desert Botanical Garden. This Phoenix botanical garden placed the individual pieces in and around the Desert Discovery Loop, the Sonoran Desert Nature Loop, around the Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop trails and at the entrance.
The matching of smooth delicate glass with sharp edged plants, which must survive rough environments in the Southwest, produces a strong contrasting image of natural and manmade creations.
Chihuly Glass Art at Franklin Part Conservatory
Chihuly hand-blown glass art is found in many botanical gardens across the United States and in more than 200 museum collections around the world. While we lived in Ohio, I visited the Franklin Park Conservatory often researching several articles I wrote on this wonderful botanical garden that were published in a variety of print and electronic magazines. Franklin Park Conservatory’s permanent and traveling collection were always found tucked among plants and hanging from the domes’ breathtaking heights in the conservatory.
The towering glass art created by Dale Chihuly is breathtaking, no matter where you see it. Common overused words like awesome and amazing will do little to accurately express the powerful impact your senses will feel from witnessing these massive handcrafted beauties.
Visit a Public Garden with Chihuly Art
The Dallas Arboretum had a large exhibition of Chihuly art in 2012, even withstanding a rain storm and extending the exhibition date for the community. It is worth the trip, wherever a public garden has added Chihuly art to their plant displays.
Gardeners who like handcrafted art and plants will enjoy the beauty and, I suppose, I am a bit partial to say, “You will enjoy it most at the Desert Botanical Garden.” At a botanical garden, you will find renewed inspiration to stay gardening.
